Hiring a deck builder or installer is often the smartest thing
to do. Not only are there situations that a
contractor specializing in decks is more equipped to
handle, such as a project that is high in the air or
over a steep hillside, there are also many codes
involved with deck construction. Breaking
these codes can earn you a hefty fine. But
more importantly, deck building codes are there for
a reason! It can be dangerous to not follow them.
Here are examples of safety requirements by
many city building inspection and permit departments that a
do-it-yourselfer is likely to bypass but a qualified deck
builder will be aware of:
▪ If open risers are chosen for deck stairs, a 4” object
must not pass through opening.
▪
Guardrail post for deck must be
attached to outer band. Use two 1/2 “hot dipped" galvanized
thru bolts with washers through each post. Do not use lag
screws, all lag screws failed in Va.Tech 200 lb. test.
▪
Do not install decks at same
level or higher than door threshold. Interior floor,
subfloor, band and joists will quickly rot in that area.
Deck can be a maximum of 8 ¼” below threshold if exterior door other
than screen or storm door does not swing over deck. Most
main exterior doors in homes swing inward so an 8 ¼” drop is
OK.
▪
Deck handrails must be of a
size you can grasp, not a 2 X 6 nailed on top of the
guardrail. Install 34”-38” above treads.
In addition, an experienced deck builder and installer
knows what claims by deck manufacturers are true and which
ones don't hold up to the test. For example,
new composite materials now
being promoted are not as strong as manufacturers state.
Hiring an experienced deck builder and
contractor well versed in your city's building permit
policies is the first step in completing your new custom
deck or the repair of your current deck.
